For Oklahoma construction workers, falls are still one of the leading causes of fatalities in their occupation. Many employees and employers still fail to use proper fall protection equipment. In an effort to reduce the number of tragic incidents, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration launched an annual campaign to raise awareness about workplace fall hazards. <\/p>\n
During the week-long event, employers can voluntarily take the time to hold a stand-down, during which they go over fall protection safety with their employees. In addition to talking about fall hazards<\/a>, the employers can reinforce safety by discussing protection methods and reminding employees what the company’s safety policies are. These campaigns also provide potential opportunities for the employees to talk about the fall hazards that they encounter while on the clock. <\/p>\n It is estimated that 5 million employees have taken part in past campaigns. There have also been government participants, commercial contractors, residential construction employers and highway construction companies. However, any workplace that has potential fall hazards is able to participate. The campaign is scheduled to take place between May 8 to 12. <\/p>\n Although falls are a major hazard in the construction industry, any employee who is required to work on a ladder or off the ground may be at risk for suffering workplace injuries<\/a> that could leave them unable to work for a prolonged period of time. Those who do so might be entitled to seek workers’ compensation benefits under their employer’s insurance coverage.
